FiiO launch flagship FT15 planar headphones

101mm drivers and an easy to drive design deliver flagship planar headphone performance at $499

FiiO introduces the FT15, a new pair of planar over-ear headphones combining an ultra-thin diaphragm with large drivers, natural walnut earcups and a comprehensive accessory package. Designed for listeners who want to explore the detail in their favourite recordings, the FT15 brings together advanced driver construction and a lightweight build, following in the footsteps of the award-winning FT5.

At its heart is an 800nm diaphragm, paired with FiiO’s proprietary full-face diamond coating. Add a patented magnetic field design, a carbon fibre headband and a supplied balanced cable and the FT15 offers a new level of performance at the price point.

A thinner diaphragm

The FT15’s diaphragm is 86.7 per cent thinner than the previous generation. At just 800nm, it is designed to respond rapidly to the music, offering precise, refined reproduction. The focus is on the moving surface itself, where low mass and controlled movement are central to the design.

FiiO has applied its proprietary diamond coating across the full face of the diaphragm to increase rigidity. This combination of thinness and stiffness is intended to support accurate movement.

Bigger drivers

The FT15 uses 101mm planar drivers with an effective radiating area of 6,443.5mm². The generous surface area is designed to create a broad, open soundstage, giving recordings a sense of scale and space. It is a substantial driver arrangement, supported by engineering that addresses how the diaphragm behaves across its surface. A patented uniform 'magnetic field' design uses custom contoured, high-strength magnets to help suppress diaphragm breakup and distortion at source.

The driver also incorporates a precision electroplated voice coil using 28nm chip-grade technology. Its construction is designed to remain structurally secure during vibration, supporting durability over extended use. Together, the diaphragm, magnets and voice coil form the core engineering of the FT15’s breakthrough in planar headphone performance.

Easy to drive

The FT15 is designed work across many devices from dongles to DAPs, hi-fi amplifiers to CD players. A sensitivity rating of 95dB/mW and low impedance of 24 ohms make it suitable for use with a USB dongle such as the the FiiO QX13, giving listeners a compact and affordable route into planar headphone listening.

The flexibility will appeal to anyone building a personal audio setup around a desk space, as well as enthusiasts who already own dedicated headphone equipment such as the FiiO K19.

The included cable uses 6N monocrystalline copper and undergoes cryogenic treatment. FiiO specifies the treatment as part of its approach to smooth signal transfer. The FT15 package includes a 4.4mm balanced connection, alongside 6.35mm and XLR-4 adapters, providing useful options for connecting to headphone amplifiers.

Comfort for longer listening

The FT15’s earcups are made from North American FAS-grade black walnut. Each pair has its own natural wood grain, giving the headphones an individual appearance.

A carbon fibre headband contributes to a total weight of 425g. FiiO’s weight-reduction design is intended to support comfortable listening sessions.

Two sets of earpads give listeners a choice of presentation, while the supplied storage case provides a dedicated place to keep the headphones between sessions.

Price and availability

The FiiO FT15 is priced at £499, €499.99 and US$499.99 and is available now.
